The Confucius Classroom

Video Conferencing completes the 5 Class Pilot Session!

On 16 December - one month after the Inaugural Class of the Confucius Classroom Video Conferencing - we successfully completed five classes of the Pilot Session!

This was truly a team effort and a big round of applause for all those who helped make it happen. Thanks to Dr. Tom Kane, Senior Consultant of Prescience Communications, Mrs. Maureen Gilchrist, QIO of Glasgow City Council, the Modern Language teachers and technicians at the four participating schools, the French Assistant teacher of Hillhead High and the French teacher of Hillhead Primary plus the students of Glasgow University who volunteered their help throughout the five sessions as well as much preparatory time leading up to Inaugural Class on 18 November.  But most importantly - a special thanks to all the pupils who stayed after school to join this experiment of distance learning.  It is a new way of learning and requires a lot of self-motivation and commitment. So well done to them for staying the course!

On the Left is the Hillhead team at the end of the Pilot Session.

The Classes were hot-linked with Hillhead High in the West End of the city so that they could join "real time" in the class.  Three Secondary Schools across the City - Kings Park and Holyrood (on the Southside) and Lourdes (in the South-West) could contribute and share with everyone in a very lively and interactive way. A lot different from the normal classroom. In total, some fifty pupils and teachers from four schools took part in this Class.

Glasgow has 31 Secondary Schools and it is hoped that this pilot project will spread across all the schools in the City.

This was the first time that so many schools in Glasgow had been simultaneously linked to the video conferencing network.

Check out all the photos of the classes in the GALLERY.

The TITLE at the TOP of the page is written in Li Shu and means Hillhead High School Chinese Class.
The smaller script below the main title is written in Xing Shu ("Welcome"). Hope those interested in calligraphy will appreciate these three main styles of Chinese calligraphy.

Confucius Classroom hosts Immersion Course in Chinese Language & Culture

In May-June 2009, the Glasgow Hub at Hillhead High Confucius Classroom hosted a 10 hour Immersion course in Chinese language & culture. With the help of Chinese students from nearby Glasgow University, the class was able to offer a variety of teaching methods - role playing, vocabulary games, writing Chinese on the computer. There was even their own version of "Who wants to be a millionaire" based on the vocabulary learned. Each week there was a guest speaker who shared some of their experiences of living and working in China/Taiwan.

Some of the group were preparing for a 3-week summer visit to Beijing, others were parents or teachers of pupils who are learning Chinese. This is the second main event organised by the Confucius Classroom at Hillhead HIgh. Visit the Gallery to see more photos of the Confucius Classroom Immersion course.

Confucius Classroom Events

To co-incide with the Dragon Boat Festival, the Confucius Classroom has launched a Dragon Dance Team. This is based at Hillhead High School but the hope is that other schools will be able to join in once the Team is established.

CHECK OUT THE GALLERY FOR PHOTOS OF THE DRAGON DANCE TEAM IN PRACTICE.

WELCOME TO THE HUB TEA CORNER!

In the Confucius Classroom, we have a corner where everyone can relax and chat over a cup of Chinese tea.

This photo of happy tea-drinkers shows Mr. Dalrymple, DHT, Mrs. Anderson, Chinese teacher with some of the many students from Glasgow University and Edinburgh University who contributed greatly to the preparation and success of the Launch. This is one area of mutual help between Hillhead High and our University neighbour.

Welcome one and all to join us at the Hub Tea Corner!
